Saluri, Leemet Start Strong on First Day of Southland Championships

CONWAY, Ark. – The New Orleans Privateers track and field team wrapped the first day of the Southland Championships with teammates taking the top two spots in the men's decathlon at the Bill Stephens Track Complex on Friday.

Karl Saluri and Markus Leemet stand first and second after the first five events in the decathlon. Saluri has a 370-point lead over his teammate, Leemet after winning four events on the day. Saluri set two personal bests in the 100-meter and an outdoor personal record in the high jump.

In the women's heptathlon, Sofia Johnsson stands second after four of seven events. Johnsson won the first event of the day, taking the 100-meter hurdles at a 13.86. Johnsson also wound up second in the 200 behind teammate Farydah Inoussa. Johnsson clocked a 25.35 while Inoussa crossed the line with a 25.18. Inoussa also took top individual honors in the shot put with a throw of 36'4".

Margot Grozier completed the shot put earlier in the day while achieving a personal best of 120'2". Stephen F. Austin leads the men's team standings with 42 points while Sam Houston State leads on the women's side with 39 points after the opening day.

The competition continues on Saturday with the conclusion of the combined events, the rest of the field event finals, and the running event preliminaries. The second day gets underway at 10 a.m.
