Coach Slessinger's Quotes Following Monday's Southland Conference Win At Lamar

RECAP | GAME BOOK (PDF)

Overall thoughts on the game

"I'm really proud of our poise and the confidence we played with. They never lost their confidence in each other. They never lost their confidence in what we were doing and executing. They stuck with the game plan all the way down to the end and really did a great job. We were selfless and didn't play selfishly at any point in time. Road wins are tough and we made this one harder than it probably needed to be. [Assistant] Coach [Jody] Bailey made a great point in the locker room that the Tulane loss, which broke our hearts, was a gut-wrenching loss along with the one at UMass led to this one. We were able to close this one out and when you look at the big picture, we had great practices after those losses. We had great practices after Christmas. We had great practices after the new year. That's where I saw the character of this team revealed. They've been working their tails off to get better and improve. I'm really proud of them. This was a team effort"

On the performance of senior forward Kevin Hill
"He really did a great job and was efficient offensively. He didn't force things that weren't there. He really played a smart basketball game. He's so good from the free throw line and we trust him on the line. We've had him on the line before and he's won many games for us from there. In the end, we were fine. It was a good night for him and I was really proud of all of the guys."

On UNO forcing 28 turnovers
"All of that credit goes to our staff. It was [assistant] Coach [Kris] Arkenberg's scout and he, Coach Schmidt, Bailey and Bil did a great job of getting the team ready to go. They had all of the answers. They had these guys prepped, ready and tuned up and that showed all the way to that steal that Christavious had. We worked on that in our preparation and our scout, and that wound up being one of the keys to our win down the stretch."

On the effort of junior guard Tevin Broyles when UNO's primary ball handlers faced foul trouble
"He got us calm. We had one stretch that I wish we could take back and I wish I would have used a timeout there. We needed them all down the stretch. It was good having that timeout there at the end and getting the play that we wanted and were able to get Cameron the ball there on that split with 1.5 seconds left. He really did a great job and kept things calm. I keep saying it, but this was a team effort. I'm so proud of the guys. They do all of the things we're asking of them. We're building a program. We're building a program that's going to last a long time. This is something that all of the great alumni, the students, faculty and staff can hopefully all be proud of. That will honor the teams that came before us that were so good and so special."

On the upcoming game at Sam Houston State
"They're great. [Sam Houston State head coach] Jason [Hooten] and I have been in this league a long time, along with [Lamar head] Coach [Tic] Price. It's going on 15 years now. He and I have gone head to head so many times now and they're so good at what they do. Huntsville is a really, really hard place to win. It's tough but our guys will be ready. We're excited to go up there and compete, and I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do."
