Birmingham, Alabama-The University of New Orleans track and field teams completed two days of competition at the Vulcan Invite Saturday at the Birmingham Crossplex Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.
It was the second consecutive day of competition for the Privateers. New Orleans student-athletes had a good day Friday breaking 3 school records in the Blazer Invite.
"It was an up and down day and we're dealing with some injuries but we found out a lot about ourselves," said head track and field coach
Benjamin Dalton.
One of the better performances of the day came from high hurdler
Michael Nicholls. One day after winning the 60-meter high hurdles at the Blazer Invite, the sophomore from Barbados ran a 21.93 in the 200-meter dash. Dalton expects the 2016 Southland Conference Outdoor hurdles champ to compete in the event during the season.
"It was a good first race for Michael because he's never run 200 indoors. I think he'll get down to 21 low in time for conference."
Senior distance runner
Clayton O'Callaghan won his heat in the 3,000 meter run in a time of 9:10:21. The New Roads, Louisiana product set a school mark at 1,000 meters one day earlier.
In the Women's 60-meter dash,
Chelise Brown recorded a personal best with a time of 7.82 seconds.
Alba Fernandez ran 25:58 in the 200 meters and
Farydah Inoussa turned in solid work in the 60 meter hurdles running 8:92 seconds.
In field events, shot putters
Alireza Rafiei (46-7) and Nicholas Mitchell (44-1) showed improvement. Mitchell's distance was a personal best.
"The weekend kind of showed us where we're at," said Dalton. "We've got two weeks before the next meet so we've got time to work on the things we need to and just grow."
The Privateers will return to competition, Sunday, Jan. 29, when they return to Birmingham for the KMS Invitational.
