An Introduction and Catching Up on All Things Lady Privateers

An Introduction and Catching Up on All Things Lady Privateers
Amanda McCarthy, October 15, 2009

First, I want to introduce myself. My name is Amanda McCarthy and I come to the University of New Orleans Women's Basketball team from Boston, Massachusetts and that is why my team calls me – “Boston”. I suspect my accent also has a lot to do with the name. Y'all and ain't are not in my vocabulary; however, “pahk” and “cah” are. And yes, I've been to “Hahvahd Yahd”, but for the next four or five years, this Boston transplant is honored and grateful to be here in Nawlins.

Now, I'll bring you up to speed with the team.  Who are the Lady Privateers?

This year the equation for success on the Lakefront is 14 girls from two Countries, five states, and 12 cities led by only the best. We have girls from Hungary, Michigan, Texas, Louisiana, Iowa and Massachusetts. All of our unique personalities combine to form a distinctive chemistry that I believe will prove to be extremely beneficial as the season begins to unfold.

What have the Lady Privateers been up to?

As many of you Lady Privateers supporters know, we graduated from Champ's Boot Camp (what we called our conditioning program) in mid-September. Our boot camp theme, “Pain is weakness leaving the body.” Graduating from Boot Camp, meant moving on to bigger and better things, like defenses and offenses. I think I can speak for everyone and say that we are extremely happy the early mornings are over, at least for now. Currently, we are all eager to get the official season underway with our first official practice Saturday afternoon!

As for off the court activities, the Lady Privateers have been in regular attendance, supporting fellow athletes, at volleyball games, swim meets, and footballs games!

Last week before Fall Break, we participated in our first community service event, the ZTA sorority Paint the Campus for Breast Cancer Event. All participants were separated into groups and assigned an area to work in. Each area would be judged and whichever group won would be allowed to choose a charity to donate funds to. Our team was separated into two groups and designated two different areas in which we would draw with chalk on the walkways to inform fellow students that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Our team came up with the slogan “Shooting for a Cure”.  One of our groups won the judging and now our team gets to donate funds to a charity of our choice!

Until Next Time,

GO LADY PRIVATEERS!!
