Wilbur Holland, a 6-foot-2 guard from Columbus, Ga., led the Privateers in scoring in both his seasons (1973-75) at UNO, helping the team to 44 wins over his career. As a senior he ranked ninth among Division II scorers with a 25.2 average, the third-highest in school history, on way to a place on the All-Louisiana squad.
UNO finished fourth in the Division II NCAA Tournament in Holland’s junior year and finished second the following season. Holland earned second-team All-America honors his senior year from the National Association of Basketball Coaches and was a third-team choice by Basketball Weekly. He also was a third-team All-American by the Associated Press. He was a fifth-round choice of the Atlanta Hawks but spent most of his NBA career with the Chicago Bulls.
Holland scored 30 or more points 13 times – a UNO record he shares with Xavier “Butch” Webster – and ranks 13th at UNO in career points (1,346) and scoring average (22.8) and second in free-throw percentage (.841). He scored in double figures in 56 of 59 games.
