DENTON, Texas -- The University of New Orleans golf team will kick off the 2008-09 season this week at the Mean Green Classic.
Â
The Privateers, coming off a program-best second-place finish at the 2008 Sun Belt Conference Championship in April, will play 36 holes on Monday before wrapping up the three-round event on Tuesday at Lantana Golf Club.
Â
It has been an eventful week for the Privateers. The squad spent the week in Shreveport after evacuating New Orleans due to the threat of Hurricane Gustav. UNO did manage to get some practice in before moving on to Denton.
Â
"You never want to have your guys pulled out of their routine," said UNO head coach Chris McCarter. "But these guys handled everything exactly like a coach would want. Their attitude is very good, and they are looking forward to competing.
Â
"This is the best schedule we have put together since I've been here, and this is a good tournament to get the year started."
Â
UNO will have some new faces this week, with Canadian freshmen
Derek East and
Sebastian Szirmak and Texas State transfer
Oscar Zetterwall all scheduled to make their Privateer debut.
Â
The trio will join junior
Hector Arias and sophomore
Ken Looper in the five-man lineup. Arias was an All-Louisiana selection in 2008, ranking second on the team with a 73.57 scoring average. Looper is coming off a strong summer, which included a top-10 finish at the Louisiana State Amateur.
