UNO (1-0) opened the season on Saturday night with a 62-53 road victory against McNeese State.
Talishia Young was the top scorer in the game for the Lady Privateers, dropping 22 points on the Cowgirls in her first game in over a year.
Young showed a glimpse of the outside shot that she has developed, shooting 2 of 3 from beyond the arc after going 0 for 3 from downtown during the three years she played prior to this season. Young added eight rebounds as the squad out-rebounded McNeese 38-35.
Other double-figure scorers for the Lady Privateers were
Candice McGee and
Brittany Helm with 11 and 10 points, respectively. The duo teamed with Young to help UNO to a 50 percent shooting clip from the field on the night.
For the Lady Privateers to continue their success, they will need to turn the tide on turnovers. The 27 turnovers against the Cowgirls tied last season's top mark from losses against Middle Tennessee and Louisiana-Monroe.
Wednesday's contest marks the season opener for Nicholls and the beginning of head coach DoBee Plaisance's second year at the helm of the program. Plaisance, a former UNO basketball player came to Thibodaux, La. from the head coaching job at NAIA Loyola of New Orleans.
Picked to finish sixth in the Southland's East Division, Nicholls posted a 2-25 mark with both of the wins coming during conference play.
The road has not been friendly to the Colonels who have posted matching 0-15 marks away from home the last two years. Nicholls last road win came at the end of the 2006-07 season at McNeese State.
The team lost its top three scorers with Jasmine Hoskins and her 7.3 points per game representing the top returner.
UNO has won three straight games in the series against the Colonels and have claimed the previous 11 encounters at home against the school, last falling in New Orleans on Feb. 17, 1978 by a score of 76-58.
The Lady Privateers will continue their homestand on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. against SMU.
