SUNO Turns Back Lady Privateers Season-Best Shooting Performance to Remain Unbeaten

NEW ORLEANS - Southern-New Orleans overcame a season-high shooting performance from the University of New Orleans for a 72-63 victory on Thursday night at Lakefront Arena.

Mirjam Sipos netted her second double-double in three games for UNO (1-15), scoring 12 points and dishing out 13 assists. The sophomore guard missed the school-record by three assists while having nine points and seven assists at the half

Dinnelle Cormier established a career-high for the second straight game, putting a game-high 22 points on the scoreboard to top her previous best of 19 in the team's last outing against Loyola.

SUNO remained one of three undefeated NAIA programs in the country in improving their record to 13-0 on the season. Two players reached double-figures for the Knights, led by Kelly Stewart, who scored 20 points including 14 in the second half.

The Lady Privateers' strong shooting began in the first half as the team shot 45.2 percent during the opening 20 minutes on 14 of 31 shooting.

The teams traded leads in the first half on five seperate occasions with the Knights grabbing their largest lead of the first half in the final seconds, a 35-31 edge they would carry into the half. SUNO held the lead despite a 22-12 disadvantage in the paint.

UNO began the second half where they left off, making 5 of 7 from the field, but could not make much head way as the Knights were matching them shot for shot.

SUNO would extend their lead to a high of 12 points at 60-48 with 7:36 to go before the Lady Privateers made their rally. UNO cut the deficit all the way down to four with 2:21 remaining on a Spring Drake lay-up.

The Lady Privateers will have a week off before resuming their schedule on Jan. 20 at 5 p.m. against Dillard at the Human Performance Center. The game is the first half of a doubleheader with the men's team, which will tip off at 7 p.m.
