NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans women's basketball team will play their final contest of the season on Monday at 6 p.m. as they visit Southern-New Orleans at The Castle.
The game will be broadcast on WGSO 990 and WGSO.com.
UNO is 0-25 on the season after falling to Delta State last Thursday night behind the career-high scoring efforts of
Mechel'le Thomas. The guard tied her career-best with seven field goals in the contest while also extending her streak of games with a long-range shot to seven in a row.
Keri Thomas is one week removed from being named Louisiana's Player of the Week. That has not stopped the junior who has reached double-figures in eight straight contests, averaging 16.9 points and 3.8 rebounds over that stretch to increase her season averages to 11.2 points and 3.3 rebounds.
The other top players for the Lady Privateers this season have been
Mirjam Sipos and
Tiffany Wallace. Sipos leads the team in scoring with 12.6 points an outing while Wallace tops the squad in rebounding with 5.4 grabs off the glass a game.
UNO will be seeking to avenge an 86-71 setback to SUNO (13-10) in a game that took place at Lakefront Arena on Jan. 19. Kellie Stewart scored 27 points in the contest on 10 of 17 shooting and leads the Knights with 15.3 points per game.
SUNO had a significant margin of victory on the glass, out-rebounding the Lady Privateers 64-42 with Janee Morton grabbing a game-high 15 rebounds. Morton added 22 points as the Knights scored 27 points on second chance opportunities in the contest.
Monday's game concludes the first season at the helm for first-year UNO head coach Keeshawn Carter. This is the second straight year in which the season comes to an end at The Castle for the Lady Privateers, who are not eligible for postseason play in light of the school's current plans to transition to NCAA Division II.
