Game Ends 2011-12 Campaign for Lady Privateers

UNO-SUNO Box Score

NEW ORLEANS – Southern-New Orleans overwhelmed the University of New Orleans with a 28-9 run to close the opening half on way to an 84-56 victory at The Castle on Monday night.

SUNO (14-10) led 17-16 before embarking on their game-changing run against UNO (0-26). The result of the spurt led the Lady Knights to carry a 45-26 advantage into the second half.

The deficit was not one that the Lady Privateers could overcome, particularly in the absence of Keri Thomas, the team's second-leading scorer.

SUNO received 21 points on 7 of 11 shooting from April Perry, who connected on 4 of 6 shots from beyond the arc.  Rose Boatner and Janee Morton had 12 and 10 points, respectively for the Knights with Boatner rounding out a double-double with 10 rebounds.

SUNO shot 48.3 percent from the field in the contest, but was riddled by 27 turnovers. The turnovers altered the offensive success of leading score Kellie Stewart, who was held to her second-lowest point production of the season with six points.

Across the court, the Lady Privateers were led by Mechel'le Thomas with 16 points and six assists. The guard's six assists were two shy of her career-high of eight established in a game against Auburn-Montgomery on Jan. 26.

Kayla Chaney added 12 points in the contest, establishing a career-high. Chaney's previous best of 11 came on two occurrences for a UNO squad that shot 26.5 percent from the field while being outrebounded 56-30.

Monday's contest ends the initial campaign for UNO head coach Keeshawn Carter, who took over the Lady Privateer program last April for athletic director Amy Champion.
