Swimming Rallies for Win at Delta State

CLEVELAND, Miss. ? The University of New Orleans swim team needed a little magic in its season-opening meet at Delta State on Saturday, and the Privateers got it from its relay squad en route to a dramatic 103-102 win over the Lady Statesmen.

Sarah Gros, Carina Morell, Kate Garvey and Ashley McClelland won the 400 freestyle relay in the meet's final event as UNO opened the season in style.

“We were four points down going into that race and the girls did a great job,” said UNO head coach Ashley Tappin. “Sarah took an early lead, and Carina, Kate and Ashley never gave it up. It was a great way to end it.”

The meet finale wrapped up a stellar day for Gros, who won both the 500 free (5:14.92 time) before setting a new school record with a 10:41.53 in the 1000.

Erica Pasquini won the 100 free (56.13) and also claimed second in the 50 (26.11). Other top performers included Courtney Hamilton, who won the 200 individual medley (2:14.96) and Erica Granesater, who took the 200 breast in 2:30.47.

UNO will take a few weeks off before taking part in the Centenary Invitational on Oct. 28.
