Swimming Completes Successful Weekend In-State

NEW ORLEANS ? The University of New Orleans swimming team spent a successful weekend against serious competition that included SEC Power LSU and perennial high level competitors Houston and Rice. Ashley McClelland had the top individual finish for the Privateers finishing third overall in the 100 backstroke event in a time of 59.20.

The core of the UNO program is the relays which were the highlight of this weekend's performances. In the 200 freestyle relay, the team of Cathryn Garvey , Tess Sweatman, Sarah Gros and McClelland defeated the University of Houston “A” relay team with a time of 1:39.66.

“For my girls to step up was a challenge,” said Head Coach Ashley Tappin. “This was strong competition and they did extremely well. We are hitting our season best times. We are on a charter course for where we need to be in three weeks.”

In addition to the 200 free relay, New Orleans swam the 200 Medley Relay in a time of 1:52.03, the 400 Free in a time of 3:39.02 and the 400 Medley Relay in a time of 4:05.96.

Individually, the 200 butterfly showcased Erica Granesater (2:13.71) and Lindsey Townsend (2:13.88) who finished fifth and sixth overall in the event. New Orleans defeated every LSU swimmer entered in the event.

New Orleans returns to competition against Sun Belt Conference rival North Texas, Saturday February 3 at the Reilly Aquatic Center in New Orleans.
