NEW ORLEANS - Continuing to out-rebound their foes by impressive
margins, the University of New Orleans took advantage of the glass once
more in a 70-51 victory over Nicholls State on Tuesday night.
UNO, improving to 4-2 on the season, pulled down 50 rebounds on the night compared to 25 for NSU.
Talishia Young had her second double-double of the season with 19 points and a team-high 15 rebounds to pace the Lady Privateer.
Le'Della English had 15 points while
Candice McGee equaled a career-high with 12 points to give UNO three scorers in double-figures.
Free throw shooting was a key for UNO, as the team shot a season-high 68.8% on 22 of 32 shooting led by Young, who shot nine for nine from the charity stripe on the night.
NSU, dropping to 1-4 on the season, was led in scoring by Katherine Plummer, who had 12 points while Maggie Green added 11 for the Colonels.
In the second half, English, a pre-season all-Sun Belt first team selection, scored 12 of her 15 points, including a 6 of 8 outing from the free throw line, most of which came down the stretch as the Colonels sent UNO to the line in a last attempt effort to climb back into the game.
The Lady Privateers capitalized on 5 of 6 shooting by McGee from the field in the first half, as she had 10 points halfway through the game. The ten points were just two shy of her career-high.
Providing a huge boost off the bench as the sixth man was Young, who went 4 of 4 from the charity stripe en route to eight points in opening half. The Metairie, La. product added nine first half rebounds, which included five on the offensive glass as the Lady Privateers had a 28-14 advantage on the boards in the first half.
UNO trailed at 4-2 before going on an 8-0 run with Young scoring four of the eight points to take a 10-2 lead.
The Lady Privateers will be back in action this Friday night at 8 p.m when they face Samford in the Four Points by Sheraton Lady Privateer Invitational.
