Lady Privateers Rally to Beat Arkansas State

NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans rallied from 17 points down and defeated Arkansas State 72-68 on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Privateers, improving to 7-4 (2-0 SBC) outscored the Lady Indians 46-29 in the second half, taking a late lead with 13.1 left in the game when Candice McGee made two clutch free throws. ASU turned over the ball on the throw-in and Jada Frazier sunk two more shots from the charity stripe to clinch the win.

Five players scored in double-figures for UNO led by Frazier, who scored 19. Le'Della English added 14 while Talishia Young and Brittany Helm had 11 apiece. Cookie Johnson completed the double-digit scorers with 10.

UNO was only out-rebounded for the third time this season with ASU having a 41-33 edge in the game while once more finding success from the charity stripe, making 69.2 percent of their free throws on 18 of 26 shooting.

ASU drops to 6-5 (1-1 SBC) on the season. The Lady Indians were led by Ebonie Jefferson who scored 14 points. Veronica Smith and Sherina Scott added 13 and 12 points, respectively.

In the second half, UNO started off slow as ASU grabbed their largest lead of the game at 17 points. The Lady Privateers rallied back, including a 10-0 rally in which Johnson scored eight points to close an 11 point gap down to two.

ASU would grab a late five point lead at 68-63 before UNO eventually tied it up on a Helm lay-up with 59.7 seconds left.

UNO got off to a quick start in the first half scoring six of the first eight points behind three-pointers by Frazier and English to take. The Tribe would strike back with a 19-6 run as a balanced offense gave ASU a 21-12 lead.

The Lady Indians would extend the lead to 16 points as UNO turned over the ball 16 times during the first half. An English three-pointer would cap scoring at the half with ASU taking a 39-26 advantage into the break. Frazier led UNO with eight points including two from beyond the arc.

The Lady Privateers return to the floor in out of conference action next Sunday when they face the nationally-ranked LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge, La. Game time for the Dec. 30 game is set for 2 p.m.
