SARASOTA, Fla. - The University of New Orleans women's swimming team,
training in Sarasota, Fla. over the holidays defeated Gardner Webb
153-93 in an unconventional dual meet on Tuesday.
The meet was scored as a cross country meet with the top 11 athletes from each school receiving points based upon finish. The event started with the slowest seed starting the race with the remaining competitors starting with a late start based upon their seed time. This put all participants on an even playing field in the endurance-based event in which participants covered 4,450 yards.
"It showed how far the girls have come in their training and reflected well on their ability to persevere in a long event," said head coach
Randy Horner.
In winning the dual, UNO (3-7) equaled the mark for most dual wins in school history of three, set in 2005-06 and matched in 2006-07. The three wins over Division I competition this season mark the most for UNO against foes from the highest level of NCAA competition in a given season..
The Privateers placed eight swimmers amongst the top 11 in the 4,450 yard event to capture the event over GW, including holds down spots three through 10.
Erica Pasquini finished third overall with a time of 1:19:30 as UNO claimed positions three through 10. Finishing behind Pasquini to round out the top five were
Kate Garvey (1:19:55) and
Sarah Gros (1:19:56).
The Privateers will next compete on Jan. 12 when they take on Savannah College of Art and Design and Georgia Southern in a double-dual in Statesboro, Ga. The meet is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
