Bo McCalebb was responded
by a red-hot Carderro Nwoji as Florida Atlantic defeated the University
of New Orleans 82-72 on Wednesday night.
UNO (14-8, 4-6 SBC) dropped the second half of a two-game road swing through Florida while losing just their third road contest in nine games on the road.
Joining McCalebb in double-figures for the Privateers was
James Parlow with 13 and
Kyndall Dykes with 12 points. McCalebb also led the team in rebounds with eight while Parlow added seven.
Nwoji could not miss for FAU (8-14, 4-7 SBC) as the junior guard shot 5 of 5 from the field with 4 of 4 shooting from beyond the the arc to lead the Owls with 18 points. Nwoji also shot perfect from the line shooting 4 of 4. Carlos Monroe had 15 while Paul Graham added 13. Sanchez Hughley added 10.
McCalebb scored the first six points for UNO who trailed early in the game, taking their first lead of the contest on a
Jaroslav Tyrna three-point play at 9-7. The lead would not last long as the Owls went on a 7-2 run to take back the lead at 14-11 and extended the lead to eight at 24-16.
The Privateers would fight back as McCalebb scored six straight UNO points to cut into the Owls' lead. FAU would keep UNO at bay as Nwoji made three-point baskets on consecutive possessions for the Owls, who made 4 of 6 from beyond the arc to open the game.
An 11-0 run by the Privateers fueled by two three-pointers by Parlow turned a 34-26 FAU lead into a 37-34 UNO advantage. Nwoji would shoot the equalizer from beyond the arc, his third of the game to tie the game at 37. After the two teams tied again at 40, UNO finished the half with a closing 5-0 run that would provide the margin heading into the break at 45-40.
McCalebb had 18 points to lead all scorers at the break. Parlow had 12 while Dykes, who shot 5 of 5 from the field in the opening 20 minutes followed with 10 points for the Privateers.
After UNO extended the lead to seven to begin the half, FAU scored seven straight points tie the game at 47 before the Privateers scored the next four points. FAU would take their lead of the half at 52-51 on a three-pointer by Graham, part of an 11-2 Owls run that gave the host a 61-53 advantage over UNO.
UNO would be the next team to take a run going on a 7-1 run that brought the Privateers within two of the Owls at 62-60. Within reach of FAU, the Privateers turned the ball over on consecutive possessions and the Owls quickly jumped to a 68-60 lead.
McCalebb scored seven straight points as UNO got to within one of FAU at 68-67. The Owls would extend the lead to seven on a Nwoji three-pointer at 75-68 followed by a McCalebb three-pointer that would cut the lead to four. FAU would push the lead to six on a fast break lay-up by Sean Alarcon before taking care of free throws down the stretch.
