Lady Privateers End Homestand with Victory over SLU

NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans women's basketball team completed their homestand with their second straight victory, a 61-47 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday night at Lakefront Arena.

UNO (2-0) was led by Brittany Helm and Ty Felder, who had 16 and 12 points, respectively. Ashley Gorsh came a basket short of a double-double with an eight point, 10 rebound effort.

SLU (0-2) received a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds from Kristy Carlin. Bethany Sinclair added another seven points and five boards for the Lady Lions.

After making just 1 of 5 shots from the field to open the game, the Lady Privateers made six of their next nine to open up a 15-4 lead.

The UNO advantage grew to 16 points at 31-15 on the back of 5 of 8 shooting from beyond the arc to start the opening half. Rachele Monroe had two of the three-pointers, the first points of her Lady Privateer career.

For the opening half, the Lady Privateers shot 46.9 percent from the field in comparison to 27.6 percent for the opposition from SLU as they entered the half with a 35-23 advantage on the scoreboard.

Both teams struggled from the field to open the second half. UNO shot 1 of 14 over the first eight minutes while the Lady Lions made just 3 of 12 from the field as the visitors pulled within six points at 37-31.

The Lady Privateers eventually got their shot back while SLU continued to struggle from the field as the host team went on a 17-6 run to take a 17 point lead and not be challenged until the final buzzer.

UNO will be back in action on Friday night at 7 p.m when they take on Samford in Birmingham, Ala. The contest against the Bulldogs represents the first of a stretch which will see the Lady Privateers play 7 of 8 games away from Lakefront Arena.
