CLEVELAND, Miss. - The University of New Orleans got into the win
column as both the men and women's swimming and diving squads picked up
dual victories over Delta State on Saturday afternoon.
The men claimed a 159-82 victory with three school record performances while the women had several season best times in a 140-101 win over DSU.
UNO's men got off to a strong start with a victory in the 200 medley relay as
Petar Petrovic started the school record breaking festivities with a 23.81 leg on the 50 back, besting his previous best of 24.13 against Alabama on Nov. 8. The relay team, which also consisted of
Mark Schindler,
Birkir Mar Jonsson and
Kevin Tinney, touched the wall in 1:34.34.
Petrovic later added a victory in the 100 back (52.05) to his win total in the dual while joining
Ash Dougan, Tinney and Jonnson in winning the 200 free relay (1:27.33).
The multi-event winners for the Privateers included
Jake Van Roekel,
Johnny DeMaine and
Ben Solari. Van Roekel claimed the 100 free (47.98) while setting a school record in the 200 free (1:44.60), breaking the previous mark he held by just five hundreths of a second.
DeMaine swept both diving events for the men, winning the 1-meter dive (256.42) and 3-meter dive (273.75) while
Ben Solari won the 500 free (4:46.88) and the 200 IM (1:56.45). Solari's time in the 200 IM bested his previous mark of 1:56.57 set against Southern Illinois on Oct. 31.
Other victories for the men included Dougan in the 50 free (22.05),
Bo John Wullings in the 1000 free (10:00.51),
Cristina Lay set the pace for the women, winning the 100 breast (1:07.48), 200 IM (2:09.73) and 500 free (5:12.84). The times in each event were the season best time for a Privateer while the 200 IM time represented the second fastest in school history. The sophomore from Peru's times in both the 100 breast and 500 free rank third all-time.
Ashley McClelland picked up wins in the 50 free (24.68) and 100 back (59.47). The times in both events were the best for the squad this year in each event while the senior from The Woodlands, Texas added a 27.51 backstroke mark, also a season best as part of a relay effort.
Other wins for the women came in the 1000 free by
Sarah Gros in a season-best time of 10:43.08, the 200 free by
Eva Hannesdottir (1:57.64),
Catalina Mendieta in the 100 fly (59.70) and
Kelly Swartzbaugh in the 1-meter dive (208.57).
The Privateer women's 200 free relay team of Mendieta, Gros, Hannesdottir and
Taylor Reynolds touched the wall first, defeating the relay squad from DSU by nearly three seconds when they finished in a time of 1:41.67.
Both men and women's teams will be off for a month before contesting the Delta State Christmas Invite, Dec. 20-22.
