Jaroslav Tyrna's three-point play with 1.9 seconds left broke a 73-73 tie, and
T.J. Worley tied his career high with 24 points as the University of New Orleans basketball team escaped with a 77-73 victory over host-Houston Baptist on Saturday evening at Sharp Gymnasium.
Tyrna, who had a career-high 17 points, had 10 points in the first half, and Worley had 15 points in the final stanza to help UNO (3-5) pick up its first road win of the year.
Tyrna, 8-for-10 from the field, helped UNO shoot a season-best 58 percent overall. The Privateers, who shot 65 percent in the second half. also got 18 points from
Kyndall Dykes on 7-for-10 shooting. Worley, Dykes and Tyrna combined to shoot 24-for-36 (66 percent) from the field.
Gordon Watt had 20 points, eight rebounds and six steals for the Huskies (0-9), while Baron Sauls had 14 points. Andrew Puzyk has 12 points on four 3-pointers, and Demetrus Judge added 10 points.
The game was back and forth throughout, as neither team had a lead larger than eight, and there were 10 lead changes.
HBU took a 71-68 lead with 2:20 to play on a Puzyk trey, but Worley answered back with a 3-pointer with 1:55 remaining to tie it. Worley gave UNO a 73-71 lead thanks to a layup with 26 seconds remaining.
But Sauls scored with 8.9 seconds left to tie it again at 73-73. The frantic pace continued with UNO point guard
Darrian McKinstry nearly driving the length of the court before dishing off to Tyrna, who laid it softly off the glass while being fouled by Watt.
HBU's Judge was whistled for a technical foul, allowing UNO to make it a two-possession game after Worley and Tyrna made two free throws.
"To get a win on the road is not easy no matter where you go, and our guys hung together, and I'm really proud of them," said UNO head coach
Joe Pasternack. "(Houston Baptist) plays very helter skelter. They shoot the ball so well, and their style is different than any team we've played.
"We had 17 turnovers, but I thought we attacked the press well and got a lot of scores off of it."
UNO will continue a three-game road trip on Monday with a 7 p.m. contest at Texas State.
