THIBODAUX, La. - The University of New Orleans won their second
straight contest on the road with a 84-55 victory over Nicholls State
at Stopher Gym on Tuesday afternoon.
UNO (6-5) had season-highs in rebounds (50) and assists (24) as the 29-point margin represented the Lady Privateers' largest margin of victory since a 29-point win over Centenary on Nov. 30, 2000.
Jada Frazier scored over 20 points for the second consecutive game as she led all scorers with 20 points.
Ty Felder notched the first double-double by a UNO player this season as she scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Joining the two in double-figures was
Brittany Helm with 15 points and
Cookie Johnson with 11.
Christie Bryant had 16 points and 10 rebounds for NSU (0-10). Dominique Washington added 12 points for the Colonels, who dropped their 10th straight to open the season.
UNO jumped out to a four-point lead in the first minute of play, before five turnovers by the Lady Privateers turned the advantage over to NSU as the Colonels took their largest lead of the game, a three-point advantage at 10-7.
The deficit would not last long as Felder scored six points during a 12-2 run by UNO which would put the Lady Privateers ahead by seven points at 19-12.
NSU cut back into the lead, getting within three at 24-21, before UNO finished the opening half on a 21-8 run to enter the break leading the Colonels, 45-29. Frazier had 15 points during the first 20 minutes while Helm and Felder had 10 apiece as the Lady Privateers shot 50 percent during the half.
UNO started the second half right where they left off in the first half, going on a 16-2 run out of the gate. The lead reached 32 at 68-36 as head coach
Amy Champion brought her starters to the bench.
The reserves did not drop the intensity as they maintained the lead handed to them.
Ashley Alexander paced the bench efforts with seven points and
Tylah Black added the first five points of her collegiate career.
The Lady Privateers will return home after a break for the holidays on Sunday, Dec. 28 when they take on Kent State (9-1) at Lakefront Arena in a 7 p.m. contest. The game against the Golden Flashes will be streamed exclusively on UNOPrivateers.com.
