McKinstry Shines Off the Bench to Lift Privateers Past Tulane

Box Score

NEW ORLEANS ? New Orleans junior guard Darrian McKinstry came off the bench to score a game-high 16 points and made his first five shots from the field as the host-Privateers defeated Tulane 49-39 on Wednesday at Lakefront Arena.

Kyndall Dykes scored 15 points on 6-of-17 shooting, and UNO held the Green Wave (4-3) to just 29 percent shooting as the Privateers (2-4) beat their cross-town rivals for the seventh time in the last nine meetings.

Jaroslav Tyrna had 11 points and eight rebounds, as the McKinstry-Dykes-Tyrna trio combined for 42 of the Privateers' 49 points. UNO won despite a 37 percent shooting night, including 33 percent in the first half.

Senior center Robinson Louisme led Tulane with 15 points, but no other Tulane player scored more than six. Tulane was just 8-for-28 from the field in the first half and was 1-for-12 from 3-point range overall.

The 39 points were the fewest scored by a Tulane team against UNO in the 44-game series.

UNO has won six straight home games against the Green Wave.

McKinstry, normally a starter but who came off the bench due to what head coach Joe Pasternack termed “a coach's decision,” helped UNO grab a 20-18 lead at halftime.

The Chicago native was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field after entering the game nearly nine minutes into the contest. McKinstry quickly got the Privateer offense going, hitting a 3-pointer with 10:42 left to give UNO an 11-10 lead.

The game went back and forth early in the second half until the Green Wave offense went cold. Louisme made a layup with 11:02 remaining to tie the game at 29-29.

But UNO held Tulane scoreless during the next six minutes, and a Tyrna layup handed the Privateers a commanding 37-29 lead with 6:05 to play.

Tulane did not get closer than five points the rest of the way.

UNO will wrap up a three-game homestand with a 2 p.m. Saturday contest against SEC member Ole Miss.
