JONESBORO, Ark.
- After coming back from 17 points down against Arkansas
State in December, the University of New Orleans women's basketball team
could not pull off another large comeback in a 73-65 loss on Wednesday night.
UNO (12-12, 6-7 SBC) was led in scoring by Talishia Young
who scored 19 points. Le'Della English added another 14 while Brittany Helm and
Jada Frazier added 11 and nine, respectively.
ASU (15-10, 10-4 SBC) received a game-high 21 points from
Veronica Smith. Sherina Scott had a double-double with 16 points and 14
rebounds while Ebonie Jefferson scored 13.
The Tribe opened scoring with four straight points and would
continue to build their lead up to 16 at 25-9 on a Brittney Hiles fast break
lay-up with 10:22 left in the first half.
Young got points on the board for UNO scoring the next four
Lady Privateer points as the team began to cut into the ASU lead. English took
the baton from Young, scoring the next seven UNO points capping a 10-2 Lady
Privateer run that brought the ASU down to eight.
Helm scored the last four points of the half to provide the
final margin entering the half at 35-30 in favor of ASU. Young had nine points
in the first half to pace the Lady Privateers scoring.
UNO cut the lead down to two on three different occasions
early in the second half, but ASU would not let the Lady Privateers get much
closer pushing the lead back up to six. Frazier scored 6 of 7 points for UNO
during a stretch that saw the Lady Privateers pull within three at 47-44.
The Lady Indians kept UNO at bay increasing the lead to
eight at 63-55. ASU would eventually push the lead up to 10 points at 65-55
before a Young three-point play cut the lead to seven.
UNO would get within five with 1:35 left on two Helm free
throws, but a Scott second-chance basket on the ensuing position would put the
Lady Privateers out of reach of the Lady Indians.
The Lady Privateers will continue their stay in Arkansas with a Saturday
afternoon contest against UALR beginning at 4:30 p.m. The contest will be
broadcast on WGSO 990 AM with live stats and video available on
