Baxter Home Run Helps Baseball Win Sixth Straight

NEW ORLEANS ? The University of New Orleans baseball team scored four runs in the sixth inning and added five more in the seventh to rally past Miami (Ohio) 9-4 on Sunday at Maestri Field.

T.J. Baxter hit a three-run home run, and the senior third baseman had five RBIs overall as UNO (6-2) won its sixth straight.

Joey Butler added three hits and three RBIs, and Ryan Eden had two hits and scored two runs. Jeff Lanning also went 3-for-4.

Jake Henderson (1-0) got the win in relief, tossing two scoreless innings and striking out one. Starter Ryan O'Shea worked around five walks and allowed just two runs in five innings.

Left-hander Matt Erwood (0-1) got the loss for the Redhawks (1-5).

“Their left-hander was really good” said UNO head coach Tom Walter. “This is a guy who gave them a chance to beat (third-ranked) Vanderbilt last week. He was challenging us with fastballs early, but we did a good job of making adjustments in the middle innings and finally got to him a little bit.”

The Redhawks scored single runs in the second and fourth innings, and Erwood was cruising early. He retired the first 10 batters he faced and surrendered just two hits in the first five frames.

But UNO finally came alive in the sixth thanks to a one-out walk to UNO shortstop Michael Knipper. Eden followed with a double to left field, and Butler got the Privateers on the board with an RBI single to left field.

Then Baxter, who had struck out in his first two at-bats, busted a 1-2 fastball over the right field wall to give UNO a 4-2 lead.

The Privateers put up a five-spot in the seventh thanks to five hits, including a two-run double from Butler.

Ryan O'Shea kept us in the ball game today,” Walter said. “He's been our closer so far this year, and it's tough to go from closer to starter. He did a good job today, and Jake Henderson was outstanding. This is a really nice way to end a good week.”

UNO will play at Tulane on Tuesday, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
