Schwaner, Knipper Lead Privateers Past Jackson State

NEW ORLEANS ? Nick Schwaner went 3-for-5 and had three RBIs as the University of New Orleans cruised past Jackson State 13-6 on Tuesday evening at Maestri Field.

Schwaner had an RBI single, double and triple and was one of four Privateers with multiple hits as UNO (13-8) won its fifth game in six outings.

Michael Knipper had three hits and scored two runs, and Jeff Lanning went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Reserve catcher Michael Rumpke came off the bench to hit a three-run home run ? the first of his career.

UNO had 14 hits overall and scored double-figure runs for the third time in five games.

Matt Brown (1-1) tossed six innings to get the win. The Calhoun CC product, who prepped at Rummel High School, gave up six hits and two runs.

Pernell Halliman (0-1) got the loss for JSU (14-10). Jerome Tyes went 4-for-5 and scored a run, and Jamaal Thelwell had two RBIs.

“I was really pleased with the effort of the guys coming off the bench,” said UNO head coach Tom Walter. “It was also nice to see Michael Knipper get three hits tonight because it takes the pressure off of him. Matt Brown did a nice job of throwing strikes down in the zone. Overall, it was a good effort tonight.”

The Privateers quickly jumped ahead with three runs in the first, thanks to three straight RBI hits by Lanning, Schwaner and Alan Harris. After Schwaner made it 4-0 in the third with an RBI single, UNO put the game away with a six-run fourth inning.

Jay Morris capped the rally with a two-run double down the left-field line.

UNO will travel to LSU for a 6:30 p.m. contest on Wednesday. The Privateers will start freshman right-hander Tyler Sanders (0-2, 11.32 ERA), though UNO will likely use multiple pitchers.
