McGonigle Hits Two Home Runs in UNO Win at Southern

BATON ROUGE, La. -- University of New Orleans senior outfielder Mark McGonigle hit two home runs and had four RBIs as the Privateers defeated Southern 6-3 on Tuesday at Lee Hines Field. The game was called in the sixth inning due to the threat of severe weather.

McGonigle, who was 2-for-2, had two of the Privateers' five hits. UNO (26-13) had three home runs and scored all of its runs on round-trippers.

Right-hander Jake Henderson (3-1) got the win after tossing two scoreless innings of relief. The Beaumont, Texas freshman struck out two and allowed just one hit. UNO used five hurlers on the night, including three in the third inning.

SU (21-13) got two hits from Brad McDavid. Mitchell Henderson (0-1) was credited with the loss after giving up six runs in 3 1/3 innings. The Jaguars had won 11 of their last 12 entering the night.

Johnny Giavotella hit a two-run home run in the top of the first to put UNO ahead and McGonigle made it 3-0 with a solo home run in the second. After the Jaguars tied the game with a three-run third, McGonigle answered with a three-run shot in the fourth.

UNO actually got a run in the sixth, but it was taken off the board since SU did not get a chance to bat in its half of the frame. Lightning was detected in the area during the inning before a severe weather watch was issued.

The Privateers, who have won four of their last five, will kick off a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Arkansas State on Friday.
