NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans dropped to 0-2 on the young
season as they fell to Tulane 5-2 on Thursday afternoon at the
University Tennis Center.
UNO
opened play by winning the doubles' point.
Kozue Matsumoto and
Cassandra Escobar gave the Tulane's top doubles pairing of Mariam
Kurdaze and Lindsay Dvorak their first loss as the Privateer duo picked
up an 8-6 victory, after allowing the Green Wave pair to rally back
from 6-1.
Tulane (2-1) won the next doubles' match, an 8-6 win by
Caroline Gerber and Jessica Lange over
Ceara Howey and
Kir Kemp,
setting up a showdown for the doubles' point on the court of No. 3
doubles.
Pia Dozo-Moreno, making her UNO debut, teamed with
Amber Garza to win the last doubles' match, a 9-7 win for the
Privateers. After breaking the Green Wave's serve, Dozo-Moreno served
out the match for the victory over Marcela Fonseca and Sharon Siegel.
The momentum from the doubles did not carry over to the singles' competition though as Tulane picked up five of the six matches.
Sofija Karalic was the lone winner for the Privateer women, defeating Siegel 6-2, 6-4 in No. 6 singles.
One
of the five UNO losses went the distance, with Garza dropping a
three-set affair at No. 3 singles to Fonseca. Fonseca, who moves to 3-0
in dual singles' competition, dropped the first set 6-4 to Garza before
winning the next two, 6-1, 6-0.
The Privateers will head on the
road for the first time this season on Sunday as they face No. 56 South
Alabama. The dual is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.
