UNO Swimming and Diving Sweeps DSU in Home Finale

NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans swimming and diving teams defeated Delta State on Saturday afternoon at Reilly Center in the team's final home competition of the season.

The win was the second this year for both squads over DSU, as the men picked up a 133-104 victory over the Aqua Statesmen and the women, a 119-118 win.

The dual, which doubled as Senior Day, saw one of the Privateer seniors win the first individual event contest of the day, as Sarah Gros took the 1000 free in a time of 10:46.96. Gros would later add a first-place finish in the 500 free (5:16.62)

Ashley McClelland, another senior on the squad took an event, winning the 200 back in a time of 2:08.85.

Records were to be found on the diving board for both the men and the women as Jonathan Field and Kelly Swartzbaugh swept the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions against DSU.

Swartzbaugh had personal-best performance with her 1-meter and 3-meter marks, the best since the reinstatement of the women's program in 2004. The St. Louis, Mo. native topped a field of four with a six-dive total of 235.13 in the 1-meter and adding a score of 231.83 to take the 3-meter.

For Field, he notched a career and school-record 288.47 in the 3-meter and established a personal-best with a 240.30 on the 1-meter.

Other multi-event winners included Jarryd Gregoire for the men and the tandem of Cristina Lay and Catalina Mendieta for the women.

Gregoire touched the wall first in both the 50 free (21.52) and 100 free (47.37) while Lay finished first in the 200 IM (2:10.44) and 200 breast (2:26.68). Mendieta rounded out the group with victories in the 50 free (24.87) and 100 free (53.77).

Other individual winners for the Privateer men included Ash Dougan in the 200 free (1:44.42), Birkir Mar Jonsson in the 200 fly (1:55.20) and Mark Schindler (200 breast, 2:09.87)

The men's 400 medley relay team of Petar Petrovic, Schindler, Jonsson and Kevin Tinney won the lone relay of the day for the Privateers, besting the field with a time of 3:28.08.

Eva Hannesdottir also claimed victory for the UNO women, winning the 200 free (1:55.81).

The Privateer swimming and diving teams will next compete in the LSU Quad meet in Baton Rouge at the end of the month. UNO and LSU will be joined by teams from Rice and Houston.
