Privateer Tennis Teams Defeat Southern in Road Dual

BAKER, La. - The University of New Orleans men and women's tennis teams defeated Southern University at the Greenwood Park Tennis Courts on Friday afternoon.

The men (2-0), ranked No. 75 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) defeated SU by a 7-0 score while the women (1-3) defeated their female counterparts 6-1.

The Privateer men started their match against SU (0-1) by taking the doubles' point.

The No. 1 doubles team of Calvin Kemp and Guilherme Rebolo defeated SU's Bino Rasedisa and Elvin Espinal 8-0 while the No. 2 tandem of Ben Smith and Jose Gaspar defeated Tyler Chin and Kashwayne Nelson 8-5. The third match was a walkover.

Singles' competition was much of the same for the UNO men as no SU player winning more than two games in a single frame.

Calvin at No. 1 singles and Vinay Kamineni at No. 2 singles improved their dual records to 2-0 on the young season  while Rebolo and Oliver Cuthill also picked up wins. The final two singles' matches were won by walkover.

For the UNO women, the match against the Jaguars (0-2) offered up the team's first win of the season after losses in the first three duals.

The Privateer women won the doubles' point as Kozue Matsumoto and Cassandra Escobar at No. 1 doubles and the team of Ceara Howey and Kir Kemp defeated their SU opposition 8-2.

Singles' play saw the lone UNO loss of the day as Escobar fell to the Jaguars' Megan Wiltz 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.

The rest of the Privateer women were victorious as Matsumoto, Kir and Howey added singles' wins to their doubles' victories earlier. Amber Garza, who did not compete in the doubles' matches earlier, defeated Kathryn Curtis at No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-1.

The UNO women will next play Louisiana-Lafayette (0-0) at 12 p.m. at the University Tennis Center on Saturday while the nationally ranked Privateer men will face Grambling at 12 p.m. on Sunday at the UTC.
