JONESBORO, Ark. - The University of New Orleans did not make a single
field goal for a 12-minute stretch that allowed Arkansas State to come
back from an early deficit and defeat the Privateers 71-56 on Saturday
night at the Convocation Center.
T.J. Worley and
Kyndall Dykes led UNO (6-8, 2-2 Sun Belt) with matching
15 point performances as the Privateers opened the game making 7 of
their first 14 shots from the field to build up a lead as large as nine
before missing 12 straight shots from the field during a period of time
that began with just over 10 minutes remaining in the opening half.
ASU (10-4, 2-1 SBC), who received a game-high 20 points from Donald
Boone, used the UNO shooting skid to take a lead in the final second of
the opening half, an advantage they would not lose for the remainder of
the contest.
Shawn Morgan narrowly missed a double-double for the Red Wolves as he scored eight points to go with 10 rebounds.
To start the game, ASU scored the opening bucket before UNO went on an 11-1 run to open an eight-point advantage.
The Privateers would extend the lead to nine at 15-6 and maintained the
lead all the way until the the last second of the first half, when a
Morgan lay-up gave the Red Wolves a 25-24 advantage heading into the
break.
ASU was able to climb back into the lead for the first time since the
opening basket as UNO was unable to make a field goal for the remainder
of the opening half after a
Destin Damachoua lay-up with 10:04.
For the stretch from the Damachoua lay-up until the halftime break, the
Privateers missed nine straight while turning the ball over seven
times. For the half, UNO shot 7 of 23 for a 30.4 percent clip after
opening the game making half of their 14 attempts.
The Red Wolves continued their momentum into the second half, putting
the first five points on the board to gain a seven-point lead before a
Worley three-pointer with 17:52 remaining in the contest ended the run
and the Privateers' shooting skid.
UNO would pull within three at 38-35 before ASU pulled away, scoring 11
of the next 15 points in the contest to extend their advantage to 10 as
the Red Wolves made 9 of 12 from the field to start the second half.
The hot shooting for the host squad would continue as they finished the
second half with a 76.2 shooting percentage as the Privateers would
only get as close as eight before the Red Wolves increased their lead
prior to the final buzzer.
The Privateers will return home for three straight contests at
