NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans had a hot shooting night, allowing the squad to overcome 31 turnovers in a 60-50 victory over Nicholls State on Wednesday night.
Freshman
Talisha Bridges led UNO (2-0) with 19 points on a night the team shot 47.1 percent from the field.
Brittany Helm added 14 points as the Lady Privateers also received eight rebounds apiece from
Ashley Gorsh and
Candice McGee.
Poor shooting limited the Nicholls (0-1) offense throughout the evening as UNO swatted 10 shots by the Colonels during the contest. For the game, Nicholls shot 30.8 percent from the field and just 7.7 percent from beyond the arc.
Rischanda Bickham led the Colonels with 15 points and seven steals while Jasmine Hoskins notched a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
A close game at the start of the second half, UNO opened up a one-point advantage with an 8-0 run to take a 37-28 lead. Helm scored four points during the stretch which put the lead firmly in the Lady Privateers' advantage.
Though Nicholls attempted to cut into the lead, UNO continued to stay in the driver's seat. A
Talishia Young lay-up pushed the edge to double-digits for the first time at 51-41.
Despite being plagued by 17 turnovers in the first half, UNO remained ahead by a 25-22 margin entering the break.
A defensive effort by the Lady Privateers that limited Nicholls to a 32.3 shooting clip played a large factor in UNO maintaining the advantage. Nicholls also struggled with turnovers in the first half, committing 11.
UNO will remain at home on Saturday for a 4:30 p.m. contest against SMU. The contest will be available on UNO Vision, the exclusive online home of Privateer athletics.
