HOUSTON - The University of New Orleans swimming and diving program
picked up two wins over Incarnate Word and a lone loss to the Rice
women to complete two days of competition in the Inaugural Rice Aquatic
Center Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
UNO's men picked up a 192.5-141.5 victory over UIW with the women splitting a pair of duals. The Privateer women dropped a 222-92 result to the host Owls, while defeating the Cardinals for the second year in a row, this time a 218-128 victory.
Jonathan Field set a school-record in the 3-meter dive, one of eight wins in 12 events against the UIW men on the day. Field's mark of 294.52 placed first and led Dominick Butts-Ealy (251.62) and Johnny DeMaine (248.55) in establishing season-bests in th event.
The season-bests by Field and Butts-Ealy were the second on the weekend after they posted a 243.45 and 242.62 in the 1-meter dive on Friday.
Relay success was present on the men's side as the 400 free relay team of Ryan Moss, Ash Dougan, Kevin Tinney and Birkir Mar Jonsson swam the second-fastest time in school history, touching the wall in a time of 3:07.86.
In the 200 medley, Jonsson, Mark Schindler, Tinney and Dougan finished their event in 1:35.70 to claim victory.
In individual events, winners included Jonsson, Ben Solari, Philip Graeter and Dougan.
Jonsson claimed the 100 back in a time of 52.22, besting his season high mark of 53.29 from the team's last dual against SMU. Solari led a 1-2 finish with Schindler in the 100 breast, reaching the wall in 58.45, ahead of Schindler's 58.80.
Graeter led teammate Jonas Grundstrom to the wall in the 200 fly with a time of 1:55.69 with Grundstrom right behind at 1:56.23. Both marks were season highs for the 200 fly participants while Dougan rounded out the winners with a season-best 21.64 in the 50 free.
The women started the second day with their first win of the meet, this coming in the 200 free relay as Haydn Maclean, Tess Sweatman, Catalina Mendieta and Eva Hannesdottir beat five opponents to the wall in a time of 1:38.15, a season-best. Maclean's 25.14 split in the first leg of the event was her fastest on the season.
The free relays ended up being a sweep for the Privateers, who returned to claim the 400 free with Mendieta, Sweatman, Maclean and Hannesdottir edging Rice in a time of 3:33.02, a team-best on the year.
Melissa Oishi took a win in the 100 breast, edging Pam Zelnick of Rice by five hundreths of a second with her 1:06.47. Oishi's time is the second-fastest in school history to Shannon McIntyre's 1985 NCAA qualifying result of 1:05.77 in the event.
Other top marks included season-bests from Joanna Wozniak, Maclean and Ashley Aranda
Wozniak posted the second-fastest 100 free for the Privateers this year, a 10:34.74 result. Aranda placed fourth in the 100 back (1:01.53), the second-best time this year for UNO
Maclean swam the 200 free in a time of 1:54.77, placing second in her event and posting the third-fastest time in school history. She later added a 2:10.72 in the 200 IM, the top mark on the year for UNO.
The Privateer men and women return to the pool on Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. at Lakefront Aquatic Center for a dual against LSU.
