Bench Erupts for Lady Privateers in Road Win at SLU

HAMMOND, La. - The University of New Orleans received a season-high 37 points from the bench and found the shooting touch that had lacked over the previous three games to earn a 69-54 victory over Southeastern Louisiana at the University Center on Tuesday night.

Talishia Young and Nicole Holmes led the bench scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively, as UNO (4-2) improved 2-0 on the road this year. The 2-0 road start marks the seventh time in school history the team has accomplished the feat.

Brittany Helm paced the Lady Privateers with 13 points and seven assists while Candice McGee added 10 points and six rebounds.

SLU (2-5) received 11 points and eight rebounds from Rashima Jenkins. Zevy Ivory chipped in another eight rebounds for the Lions.

The shooting that went missing over the previous three games returned for UNO early in the contest. After missing their first two shots from the field, the Lady Privateers connected on 9 of their next 11 attempts to take a 32-19 lead.

As a team, UNO shot 61.9 percent from the field in the opening half and 9 of 12 from the charity stripe on way to a 37-28 advantage heading into the break. The 37 points represented the first time on the season that the Lady Privateers topped 30 points in the opening half, surpassing a 26 point performance against Harvard.

UNO's lead was quickly cut to three points to start the second half as SLU scored 8 of 10 points out of the break.

The Lions' run came to a halt as Helm picked up a steal and converted a fastbreak lay-up on the other end to start a 8-0 stretch to give the Lady Privateers a 47-36 edge. The 8-0 spurt came as SLU went without a point for just over seven minutes of play.

Six points in a row by the Lions kept UNO on its toes and SLU within five points. Five was as close as the Lions would get the remainder of the game as the Lady Privateers took off on a 10-1 run that pushed the visiting squad's lead to a game-high 14 point advantage.

The UNO lead would grow to 16 before the contest was over with SLU unable to cut the lead to single-digits.

The Lady Privateers will continue their busy week by opening the Big Easy Classic at Tulane's Fogleman Arena against Longwood on Friday at 5 p.m. The team will then return to the Lakefront Arena for a Saturday tilt against Prairie View A&M scheduled for a 5:45 p.m. start.
