GULFPORT, Miss. - Julius Coles scored 18 points, and Elton Frazier added 17 as Canisius defeated New Orleans 63-48 in final-day play of the South Mississippi Christmas Classic on Wednesday.
Frazier was 8-for-10 from the field and helped the Golden Griffins shoot 51 percent as Canisius (6-6) won for the second straight day.
UNO did hold Canisius leading scorer Frank Turner to just nine points. The senior scored a career-high 30 points in the Griffs' 59-56 win against Southern Miss on Tuesday.
Charles Carmouche paced the Privateers with 16 points, while Devin McDonald and Carl Blair added nine points each.
The Privateers were without leading scorer Billy Humphrey for the second straight game. The senior guard injured his knee during Monday's loss to Southern Miss, though the injury is not considered serious.
It was the sixth straight loss for UNO (5-8), which tied the school's longest losing skid since December 1989.
UNO shot just 30 percent from the field and suffered 19 turnovers.
Despite the shooting woes, UNO still led 21-17 with five minutes left in the first half. But Canisius closed the half with a 15-2 run to take a 32-23 lead at halftime.
"We had the tempo like we wanted it early and then they got on some fast breaks that hurt us," said UNO head coach Joe Pasternack. "It's the same story. We can't score right now. Not having Billy really hurts us."
UNO never got the lead under seven points, as the Privateers shot just 28 percent in the second half. The squad was held scoreless for nearly six minutes at one point.
"We're not shooting the ball very well," Pasternack said. "It's hard to get stops on the defensive end when you can't hit shots. We're not getting easy transition baskets, and that's a big part of the problem."
UNO will take a break for the holidays and return to action on New Year's Eve, hosting Middle Tennessee in a 4 p.m. matchup at Lakefront Arena.
