Hannesdottir Anchors UNO to Victory over Tulane on Second Day of Duals

NEW ORLEANS - After being beat out at the wall in her two previous appearances in the pool against Tulane, New Orleans' Eva Hannesdottir made the most of her final appearance by beating the Green Wave at the finish to lead UNO to a come-from-behind victory over their crosstown rival on Saturday at Lakefront Aquatic Center.

UNO trailed in the team scoring entering the 400 free relay and needed a win to claim their dual against the Green Wave. Hannesdottir held off a furious rally by Tulane's anchor to clinch the 100-76 victory.

In the other duals, the UNO women fell to Western Kentucky 113-66 with the WKU men defeating their Privateer counterparts 98.5-84.5.

In addition to the 400 free relay win against Tulane, other top finishes for the Privateer women came from Laura Cempel, Catalina Mendieta and Haydn Maclean as the trio all finished second in their respective events.

Cempel completed the 1000 free in 10:28.08 with Mendieta posting a 24:43 in the 50 free. Maclean rounded out the trio with a time of 2:08.88 in the 200 IM, the second-fastest in school history.

Other notable finishes included Fanny Varga posting a 59.82 in the 100 back, the first UNO women's swimmer to post a sub-one minute result this year and ranking her sixth all-time in the event. Wendy Oleskiw and Tess Sweatman acheived season-best times in the 50 free with a 24.82 and 24.92, respectively.

Two pool records fell on the women's side of the pool as WKU's Claire Donahue set the 100 fly record in 54.14, eclipsing the 55.88 by Shelly Ripple from 1997. The Lady Topper 400 free relay also broke a record, beating by a second and a half LSU's 1986 mark with a time of 3:30.37.

For the men, Jonathan Field won his second event of the weekend, taking the 1-meter dive with a season-best 245.55, edging out teammate Johnny DeMaine's 228.85 in a 1-2 finish by the Privateers.

In the pool, the UNO men had three individuals finish second with Jonas Grundstrom, Mark Schindler and Phillip Graeter completing the task.

Grundstrom finished the 1000 free in 9:43.34 with Graeter placing second in the 200 IM with a 1:55.87. Schindler netted a season-best time of 58.14 in the 100 breast, leading Ben Solari (58.67) to the wall for a 2-3 UNO finish.

Ash Dougan added another Privateer top three finish, posting his best time of the year in the 50 free with a 21.60.

WKU's men posted a single pool-record, equaling LSU's 200 medley relay result with a 1:32.62 first-place finish. UNO finished second in a time of 1:35.21, the second-fastest mark on the year for the Privateers.

The next meet for the Privateers will be in Cleveland, Miss. as the squad participates in the Delta State Christmas Invitational from Dec. 19 through Dec. 21.
