No. 75 UNO Men's Tennis Falls to Southern Miss 5-2

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The No. 75 ranked University of New Orleans men's tennis team met defeat for the third straight match, dropping a 5-2 dual to Southern Miss at the Hattiesburg Country Club on Tuesday afternoon.

UNO (6-3), which opened the season with six straight victories are now in the midst of their longest losing streak as a team since falling in six straight matches during the month of March in 2005.

Doubles continued to be a problem for the Privateers, who dropped the doubles' point for the fourth straight match, losing two of three doubles' matches to USM (4-2).

The lone victory in the doubles' came at No. 1 where Calvin Kemp and Guilherme Rebolo defeated Jan Burmeister and Andrew Poole 8-5. The victory by the UNO tandem was the first this season by any duo over the Golden Eagles' No. 1 unit. Kemp and Rebolo are now 7-2 in dual play with wins in the last three matches.

On the singles' side of the competition, the Privateers handed out another first loss as Jose Gaspar defeated Strate Krstevski 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5. Krstevski had won all five of his previous matches. The other UNO win came at No. 6 where Oliver Cuthill improved to 5-0 in the position and 7-1 on the year with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Oscar Machuca.

The rest of the singles' matches did not fall the Privateers' way with only one of the UNO losses going three sets as Ben Smith put up a fight at No. 4, falling in three sets to Diego Machuca 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.

Rebolo and Kemp saw their losing streaks extended to four and three matches, respectively. Rebolo fell 6-4, 6-3 to Poole at No. 3 while Kemp was defeated by the No. 99 player in the country, Patricio Alvarado 6-0, 6-1. A Vinay Kamineni loss at No. 2 to Domagoj Anic 6-3, 6-2 rounded out the singles' competition.

The Privateers will look to get back on the winning side of things as they host Samford at 2 p.m. on Friday at the University Tennis Center. Samford is 0-5 on the season and play Jacksonville State on Thursday before coming to the Crescent City.
