LAFAYETTE, La. - The University of New Orleans had the hot hand for
most of the game as they swept the season-series over
Louisiana-Lafayette for the first time since 2002-03 with a 74-62
victory at the CajunDome on Sunday afternoon.
Jada Frazier
became the 14th player in school history with 1,000 points, reaching
1,017 for her career with a team-high 18 points for UNO (13-15, 8-9 Sun
Belt).
Ty Felder had her fourth double-double of the season, providing
the Lady Privateers with 17 points to go with 11 rebounds.
Brittany
Helm had 15 points while
Cookie Johnson rounded out the double-figure
scorers with 14 points, which included 6 of 6 shooting from the charity
stripe in the final 50 seconds of the game.
ULL (3-24, 0-16 SBC) received a game-high 21 points from Mercedes Johnson with Jasmine Barnes putting in 12.
The
team's top scorer on the season, Alexis Green, scored 15 points, but
was held in check defensively from the field, limited to 5 of 19
shooting.
The Lady Privateers matched their scoring output from
the last game in the first 20 minutes of play as they headed into the
break with a 41-31 advantage.
UNO used a season-high 54.8
percent opening half shooting performance, which included 6 of 8
shooting from beyond the arc, to take control of the contest in the
first half.
Frazier had 14 points at the break on 6 of 9
shooting from the field. The senior guard's first basket at the 17:42
mark provided the 1,000 and 1,001 points of her career. Felder added
another 11 points and five rebounds for the Lady Privateers.
The
Ragin' Cajuns started the game shooting 1 of 7 from the field as the
Lady Privateers built up an 8-2 lead. UNO would not lose sight of the
lead and after ULL closed within four at 20-16, the team scored 21 of
the next 32 points to gain their largest advantage of the half at
41-27. The host squad scored the final four points to head into the
break.
Helm started the second half on a tear for UNO, scoring
six of the team's first 10 points to push the advantage back to 14,
51-37 with 13:05 remaining in the game.
From that point forward,
the Lady Privateers would not look back, keeping the Ragin' Cajuns away
from breaking into single-digits until Mercedes Johnson connected on a
fast break lay-up with 49.5 seconds left in the contest, the part of
seven straight points for the ULL forward over a four-minute span.
UNO's
Johnson would make all six free throw attempts she took in the final 50
seconds, part of an effort that saw the point total pushed to 72, the
most for the squad in the 2009 calendar year, topping the 65 points
scored against Western Kentucky and Arkansas State.
The Lady
Privateers hit the road for their regular season finale, a Wednesday
night contest at 7 p.m. against UALR at the Jack Stephens Center.
