Turner Helps ULM Past Privateers

NEW ORLEANS ? Rudy Turner had a double-double with a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds to help Louisiana-Monroe to a 61-56 win at New Orleans on Saturday.

Dynile Forbes (15) and Afam Nweke (13) combined for 28 points off the bench and helped ULM (8-15, 4-8 Sun Belt Conference) overcome 23 turnovers in picking up its third straight win over UNO (10-14, 5-8).

T.J. Worley had 17 points for the Privateers, while Kyndall Dykes had 10 points and eight rebounds. UNO shot just 33 percent for the game ? 31 percent in the second half. The Privateers were also just 1-for-9 from 3-point range.

The two teams combined for 48 fouls, four technical fouls and 40 turnovers as well as 59 free throws.

Despite the struggles, UNO managed to take a 38-29 lead with 12 minutes to play before ULM took control. The Warhawks, though, held UNO without a field goal for a three-minute stretch to cut the margin to 39-38 with 9:24 remaining.

ULM grabbed its first lead of the half on a Forbes 3-pointer to make it 45-43 with 6:59 to play.

The Warhawks took the lead for good thanks to a 8-0 run starting at the 6:06 mark. Turner capped the spurt with an emphatic slam dunk with 4:06 remaining to make it 53-46.

ULM struggled from the free-throw line (3-for-9) in the final five minutes to keep UNO around. But the Privateers managed just one field goal in the final 3:40 and could get no closer than 58-56 with 52 seconds left.

Turner took control in the second half, recording 12 points and five rebounds.

ULM beat UNO for the fourth time in five SBC meetings since joining the league in 2006.

The two teams combined for 26 turnovers in the first half, and neither team shot 40 percent from the field.

UNO, which made just one of its first nine attempts, shot 36 percent in the opening frame but still led 21-19 at halftime.

The Privateers will now start a busy stretch on the road with a 7 p.m. Thursday contest at North Texas. UNO will close the regular season playing four of its final five games on the road.
