NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans men's tennis team won their fourth straight match, defeating Lamar 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.
UNO improved to 11-5 with the victory and 7-2 on their home court while LU, which had won their previous duals by 7-0 score, dropped to 6-6 on the season.
Several players won both matches on the day for the Privateers, highlighted by Guilherme Rebolo wins in both singles' and doubles'. Rebolo, who entered his No. 6 singles' match, having lost his previous six singles' contests, defeated Devin Harley 6-0, 6-3.
The victory followed a doubles' win for the junior from Sao Paolo, Brazil. Earlier in the dual, Rebolo teamed with Abdelrahman Zaki at No. 2 doubles to defeat Richard Filikula and Dusan Savkovic 8-5 to give the Privateers the doubles' point. The win improved the UNO tandem's record to 3-0 on the season while handing the Cardinal pairing their first loss after starting the season 3-0.
The deciding match was set up after the two squads split the first two doubles' matches completed.
LU's Mario Janjic and Diego Snyder won their fourth straight match by defeating Jose Gaspar and Vinay Kamineni on the No. 3 court 8-3 in the first match completed. At No. 1, UNO's Calvin Kemp and Ben Smith won their fifth straight match, defeating Maciej Bogusz and Marton Horvath 8-6. Kemp served out the match for the Privateers, after the tandem's 7-4 lead was cut to 7-6 after the Cardinals won two straight games.
When play moved to singles, UNO took the remaining matches.
Zaki improved to 4-0 on the season, while ending Snyder's five match win streak, claiming a third-set super-tiebreaker on way to a 6-4, 5-7, 10-6 victory. Kamineni also needed a third set super-tiebreaker to win his match, bouncing back from a set down to defeat Janjic 0-6, 6-3, 10-8.
Other victories for the Privateers included Kemp at No. 1, Smith at No. 3 and Cuthill at No. 4 in straight sets. The win for Kemp extended his winning streak to five matches while Smith, Cuthill, Kamineni and Kamineni all won for the fourth straight time.
The Privateer men will play their final scheduled home match of the 2009 campaign against Southern Illinois on Friday at 2 p.m.
