MOBILE, Ala. - University of New Orleans starter
Jake Henderson retired
only four South Alabama batters, giving up seven run and eight hits
before departing as the Jaguars claimed a 12-1 victory at Stanky Field
on Friday night.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for USA (8-12, 1-3 Sun Belt) while UNO (5-13, 1-6 SBC) extended both their current losing streak and regular-season road skid to eight games. The eight-game losing streak ties the Privateer school-record set in 1999 and 2005.
Matt Jackson (2-2) picked up his first victory for the Jaguars since a Feb. 20 win over Mercer, going seven innings on the mound, allowing just one run on three hits. Jake LeBlanc and Phillip Byrd closed out the game for Jackson, each going an inning while not allowing another Privateer hit.
USA received a 3-for-4 performance from Zach Grinchor who scored three runs while David Doss picked up hits in both of his at-bats, including the 31st home run of his career.
Jay Morris, who came home on a Jared Comarda sacrifice fly in the first inning for the lone UNO run, batted 2-for-3, accounting for two-thirds of the team's hits in the game.
USA jumped on Henderson (2-2) early, scoring three runs in their first appearance at the plate. A Doss home run, his sixth on the season, pushed the Jaguar senior into a tie for eighth all-time in school history in the category.
The lead for the Jaguars would grow to six at 7-1 as Henderson allowed four more runs on four hits in the second inning, before
Matt Brown replaced the Privateer starter. Brown retired the next two batters to get UNO out of an inning that saw the lead-off hitter Jake Overstreet start the frame with a home run as 10 USA batters would come to the plate.
In the fourth inning, the first four batters for USA reached base, with the Jaguars capitalizing on the opportunity to add four more runs to their count.
The Privateer bullpen held USA to just one run over the final four innings with
Mats Mattson keeping the Jaguars off the board for two innings before
Tyler Sanders allowed one run in his two innings of work.
The two teams will continue their conference series on Saturday at 2 p.m. as USA will send Lance Baxter (2-1, 3.65 ERA) to the mound against UNO's
Joe Zimmermann (0-2, 5.09 ERA).
