Privateer Tennis End Busy Weekend with Wins over Austin Peay

NEW ORLEANS ? The University of New Orleans men's and women's tennis teams were victorious on Sunday at the University Tennis Center, defeating Austin Peay.

The UNO men improved to 10-5 on the season with a 7-0 victory over their AP counterparts while the women are now 7-4 after a 6-1 win over the Governors.

For the Privateer men, the doubles' point was clinched with ease as Guilherme Rebolo and Abdelrahman Zaki won on the No. 2 court by an 8-3 score over Renan Bezerra and Fransisco LaPuente.

Prior to that match finishing up, Vinay Kamineni and Jose Gaspar defeated Bret Shaw and Dusty Brady at No. 3 8-0.

With the doubles' point in hand, UNO was pushed to the brink in the final match of the doubles' competition as Calvin Kemp and Ben Smith won for the fourth straight time at No.1, defeating Leonardo Locatelli and Lucas DeBrito 9-8.

As play turned to singles, the Privateers won in straight sets outside of the No. 1 position. Calvin, with the longest win streak at five, rallied from a set down to win in a super-tiebreaker in the third set. Calvin was a 4-6, 6-0, 10-8 win over Locatelli.

The other matches all came relatively easy as Oliver Cuthill at No. 4, Gaspar at No. 5 and Zaki at No. 6 all dispatched their opponents without letting them gain a single game.

Kamineni at No. 2 defeated DeBrito 6-0, 6-1 while Smith improved to 4-1 at No. 3, with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Bezerra.

On the women's side, each of the doubles' matches were close contests.

Cassandra Escobar and Kozue Matsumoto picked up a win for UNO at No. 1 with a 9-7 victory over Mariana Pagan and Yuki Nakamura. Michelle Liew and Demi Georgakopolous won for AP at No. 2, 9-8 (3) over Ceara Howey and Kir Kemp.

Rounding out the doubles' matches and helping the Privateers claim the doubles' point was an 8-4 win by Pia Dozo-Moreno and Anita Racz over Alexandria Pyle and Brittany Hayes.

With the momentum in hand following doubles', the women won 5 of 6 singles matches. The lone victory for the Govs came at No. 1 where Pagan knocked off Escobar 6-2, 6-1.

Kir had the toughest match of the UNO victors, prevailing in a third set super-tiebreaker 17-15 after exchanging 6-2 scores with Liew over the first two sets.

Other winners included Howey at No. 3, Amber Garza at No. 4, Dozo-Moreno at No. 5 and Racz at No. 6, all in straight sets. The win for Racz was the second of her collegiate career while Dozo-Moreno has a team-high three-match win streak.

Both teams will be in action this week, with the women hosting Illinois State on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and the men taking on Lamar at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
