TROY, Ala. - The University of New Orleans' tennis teams were swept in their respective regular season finale while visiting Sun Belt Conference rival Troy on Thursday afternoon at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.
The UNO men (12-7) fell by a 4-3 result while the women (9-8) were defeated 6-1.
In the men's dual, the two teams split the first six points decided before Troy (7-11) received the win thanks to a Mario Silva victory on the No. 5 court over Jose Gaspar 6-7 (4), 6-2, 7-6 (5). The deciding match was brought about after the UNO men rallied back after losing the doubles' point.
Calvin Kemp, Vinay Kamineni and Ben Smith each won at the top of the singles' lineup for head coach Burzis Kanga. Kemp at No. 1 defeated Aurelien Tave 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 while Kamineni claimed a 6-3, 7-5 win over Branko Weber. Smith closed out the victories for the Privateers 6-2, 6-1 over Xavier Masson.
In doubles', despite losing 2 of 3 matches, the No. 47 ranked tandem of Kemp and Smith bounced back from a Tuesday loss against West Florida with an 8-7 win over Weber and Silva on the No. 1 court.
On the women's side, the Trojans (11-6) rolled to their eighth straight victory.
The lone winner for the Privateers was on the No. 3 singles' court where Kozue Matsumoto won a third set super-tiebreaker, prevailing 2-6, 6-2, 10-6 over Leonie Guijt. UNO almost added another winner as Kir Kemp came out on the wrong side of a super-tiebreaker, falling 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 against Rawia Elsisi at No. 1.
Troy came away as a straight-set winner in the remaining four singles' matches after sweeping the three doubles' matches.
Both Privateer tennis teams will await their seeding for the SBC tournament, which begins in Denton, Texas on Apr. 17
