Six-Run Second Puts Nicholls Ahead in Win over UNO

NEW ORLEANS - A six-run second inning by Nicholls State broke open a 3-3 tie as the Colonels went on to win 11-5 over the University of New Orleans at Maestri Field on Wednesday night.

Scott Moseley went 2-for-4 with four RBIs to lead NSU (18-25). Josh Swenson added three RBIs while Chris Murrill scored three times as the Colonels broke a seven-game losing streak that dated back to an Apr. 15 win against then-No. 1 ranked LSU.

Zephan Rochelle (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win after pitching two perfect innings in relief of starter Drew Erwin, who allowed four runs on five hits in two innings of work.

Jay Morris had a 3-for-5 outing for UNO (17-27), while bringing in two runs. Alan Harris added a 2-for-4 performance of his own while Justin Edwards tallied two RBIs.

After both teams scored three runs apiece in the first inning, the Colonels put six runs on the board in their second trip to the plate.

Three walks, two hits, a batter hit by pitch and an error provided NSU an opportunity to put runs across the plate, ending the day for Privateer starter Cory Myers (2-6). Myers only retired four batters, yielding five runs on two hits while walking three, before handing the ball over to Tyler Sanders, the second of nine pitchers for UNO on the day.

The Privateers would cut the deficit to five in the bottom of the second with a bases-loaded single by Morris bringing home Harris.

The Colonels got the run back in the sixth after opening the frame with back-to-back singles with an error scoring Murrill from third.

NSU would score their final run in the eighth without recording a hit as two walks preceded an errant throw on an attempted pickoff that allowed the run come across the plate, the final error of three in the game for UNO.

The Privateers will hit the road this weekend as they play Florida Atlantic in a Sun Belt cONFERENCE series. The three-game set gets underway on Friday at 5:30 p.m. CT.
