PENSACOLA, Fla. - The University of New Orleans tennis teams split a pair of duals against West Florida on Tuesday afternoon with the women claiming a 5-2 victory and the men falling by the same score.
The Privateer women improved to 9-7 on the season, winning 5 of 6 singles' matches to defeat UWF (15-6), the No. 6 team in Division II.
Losing the doubles' point to start off their dual, UNO picked up wins at the top three spots. Cassandra Escobar and Kozue Matsumoto picked up straight-set victories at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. On the No. 1 court, Kir Kemp won for just the second time in 10 matches at the spot, defeating Suzana Cavalcante, who retired after taking the first set.
Sofija Karalic and Amber Garza were the other winners with Karalic defeating Caitlyn Baines 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5 and Garza taking a 6-4, 7-5 win over Naomi Higa at No. 6.
The UNO men fell to 12-6 on the season while having their five-dual winning streak snapped by UWF (11-8) ranked No. 9 in Division II.
Calvin Kemp and Ben Smith, the No. 47 ranked doubles' team in Division I, fell to Kevin Ducros and Andrey Pozhidaev 8-5 on the No. 1 court. Ducros and Pozhidaev, ranked No. 8 in Division II became the first tandem to beat the Privateer pair in six matches.
The loss at No. 1 was one of three as UWF swept the doubles' point.
Singles' victories for UNO came at No. 3 where Smith defeated Luis Arboleda 6-2, 6-4 and No. 6 where Guilherme Rebolo continued his winning ways with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 win over Sean Gunnels.
Vinay Kamineni at No. 2 put up the biggest fight of those coming out on the losing side for the Privateers, dropping a 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 match to Pozhidaev, ranked No. 43 in Division II.
Both Privateer teams will stay on the road and will play at Troy on Thursday at 2 p.m.
