OXFORD, Miss. - For the second straight night, No. 14 ranked
Mississippi built a lead while holding the University of New Orleans
without a hit early in the game, on way to a 7-0 victory over the
Privateers on Wednesday night at Swayze Field.
Nick Schwaner was the first UNO (13-18) batter to reach against Ole Miss (24-8) starter Brett Bukvich (4-1), leading off the fifth inning with a single to right.
By the time Schwaner got his hit, the Rebels' offense had taken a 3-0 lead for Bukvich, who ended up allowing three hits while striking out seven over seven innings.
Kyle Barbeck and Wade Broyles pitch an inning of relief apiece, holding the Privateers scoreless over the final two innings for Ole Miss, who became the first team to keep UNO from scoring a run since Tulane on Mar. 13, 2007.
Rebels' outfielder Logan Power was the lone player on either team with multiple hits, batting 2-for-4 and scoring a run.
Cory Myers (2-4) took the loss for the Privateers, yielding three runs on three hits in two innings of work. Myers was the first of nine pitchers for UNO, who entered the game with intentions on using their whole bullpen.
As they did on Tuesday, the Rebels got on the board in the opening frame with two outs. After a single and a hit batter reached for Ole Miss, David Phillips doubled down the left field line to bring both runners home for a 2-0 lead.
The Rebels added another run in the second inning and would not score again until capitalizing on a balk to up their lead to 4-0 in the fifth.
Ole Miss third baseman Zach Miller put up the home squad's fifth run of the game in the sixth. Miller, who entered the game with two stolen bases on the season, added two more to his total, before coming home on a sacrifice fly.
A run in the seventh and another in the eighth would round out the scoring, while completing a string of five straight innings for the host team with at least one run for the Rebels.
The Privateers will hit the road for Western Kentucky on Thursday ahead of a three-game Sun Belt series, which will get underway at 6 p.m. on Friday night.
