BATON ROUGE, La. -- Gregory Whitfield had three hits, including a two-run home run, to lead Southern to an 11-5 win over visiting New Orleans on Tuesday at Lee-Hines Field.
James Armstrong went 3-for-3, while Jesse Olivar went 3-for-5 and scored a pair of runs for SU (26-14), which swept a home-and-home series with UNO (22-30).
The Jaguars scored in each of their first three at-bats and led 6-1 after three innings. SU got six runs and nine hits off UNO starter
Cory Myers (2-7) and also got another solid effort from left-hander Chase Richard (6-3).
Richard, who got the win in SU's 18-3 win at UNO on March 24, picked up his second victory against the Privateers this year. The Louisiana-Lafayette transfer went 6 2/3 innings and gave up four runs (three earned). The left-hander struck out six and worked around four walks.
His offense, meanwhile, recorded 15 hits overall.
Ryan Eden went 3-for-4 and had a solo home run for the Privateers, and
Alan Harris added two hits and two RBIs.
The Privateers used seven pitchers on the night, which included an eighth-inning appearance from catcher
Tyler Sanford. Sanford gave up a hit and a run but did notch his first career strikeout.
UNO will wrap up the regular season this weekend with a three-game series at home against Louisiana-Lafayette. The teams will kick off the series at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at Maestri Field.
