Cajuns Sweep Weekend Series to End UNO Baseball Season

NEW ORLEANS ? The University of New Orleans baseball team had its 2009 season come to an end on Saturday, as Louisiana-Lafayette pounded out a season-high five home runs in an 18-2 win at Maestri Field.

Greg Fontenot went 4-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs, and Les Smith hit two-round trippers as ULL (25-28-1, 14-15 Sun Belt Conference) clinched the No. 5 seed in next week's Sun Belt Tournament.

The Privateers (22-33, 12-18) were swept in a three-game series at home for the first time this season. UNO finished the year tied for ninth in the Sun Belt and will miss out on the league tournament for the first time since 2003.

ULL jumped out to a 9-0 lead after three innings ? highlighted by a five-run third ? and added seven runs in the ninth.

The Ragin' Cajuns finished with a season-high 22 hits. The offense overshadowed an incredible day defensively, as ULL turned a school-record six double plays -- including one in each of the first five innings.

Sophomore right-hander Michael Cook (5-3) was the beneficiary on the mound. The Lafayette native went 6 1/3 innings and gave up just two runs and five hits.

Cory Myers (2-8) got the loss for UNO after surrendering two hits and three runs in 1 2/3 innings. The bullpen had its struggles as well, giving up 15 runs in the final 7 1/3 innings.

ULL scored in all but three at-bats.

One bright spot for UNO was senior right-hander David Burch. The Morgan City product went a season-high four innings and allowed just two hits and a run. He shut out the Cajuns in his first three innings of work.

UNO's Jay Morris went 2-for-4, while Rodarrick Jones provided an RBI double.
