NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans closed out the 2009-10 home slate by sweeping a pair of duals against Delta State on Friday night at Lakefront Aquatic Center.
A
Jonas Grundstrom school-record performance in the men's 1000 free highlighted a 127-110 win for the UNO men with the women joining in the victory with a 134-92 result of their own over DSU.
In the dual's first individual event, Grundstrom set a blistering pace early and finished the 1000 free in a time of 9:38.26, surpassing the previous top mark of 9:40.64 set by
Bo Wullings a year ago. Grundstrom's time was also four seconds faster than his season-best mark of 8:42.27 from November against Incarnate Word.
Grundstrom added a first place finish in the 200 fly later in the dual, hitting the wall in 1:57.03, placing ahead of
Ben Solari (1:58.97).
A 1-2-3 finish by
Phillip Graeter, Solari and Nicklaus Kunst put 16 points on the board for the Privateers in the 200 IM. Graeter won the event with a 1:54.90, followed in order by Solari (1:56.29) and Kunst (1:58.20).
Mark Schindler continued the 1-2-3 finishes by pacing Solari and Kunst to the wall in the 200 breast. Schindler finished in a time of 2:08.43, edging out Solari by one-hundredth of a second.
Jarryd Gregoire made his return to the pool from injury to claim the 50 free in a season-best time of 21.26, beating
Ash Dougan (21.56) in a close race to the wall.
Bo Wullings aided the sprint free success by winning the 200 free with a 1:44.24 result.
The UNO men added wins in both relays with the 200 medley effort of 1:34.62 ranking as a season-best in the event with.
Diving was a clean sweep for the Privateers in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events.
Dominick Butts-Ealy posted his first event win of the season by claiming the 1-meter dive with a six-dive total score of 287.18, followed by
Jonathan Field (270.60) and
Johnny DeMaine (250.88). Field bounced back to win the 3-meter dive over six dives with a score of 285.60, followed by DeMaine (277.77) and Butts-Ealy (276.38).
On the women's side,
Laura Cempel set the tone with a first-place finish in the first women's event, taking the 1000 free race with a 10:29.75. Cempel added another first place finish in the 200 fly, racing to a 2:09.27 result.
The distance free events were swept when
Haydn Maclean and
Claire Barron posted season-best efforts on way to a 1-2 finish in the 500 free. Maclean finished in 5:06.69 with Barron cutting nearly two seconds off her previous best result with a 5:10.91.
The event win in the 500 free was one of two for Maclean, who teamed with
Melissa Oishi to post a 1-2 finish in the 200 IM. Maclean posted a season-best 2:08.49 to top Oishi's 2:11.37. Oishi was part of another strong UNO result, posting a 2:24.75 in leading a 1-2-3 finish with
Joanna Wozniak (2:27.51) and Barron (2:27.78) in the 200 breast.
Another 1-2 finish was to be found in the 200 where Wozniak and
Eva Hannesdottir posted times of 1:55.12 and 1:56.59, respectively. Hannesdottir would finish second again, this time behind
Catalina Mendieta in the 100 free, an event win Mendieta finished in 53.94.
In the relays, the 200 women's medley relay squad finished first in a time of 1:48.63, the second fastest time on the season.
The next dual for UNO will take place on Jan. 23 when the Privateers head to Alabama to face the Crimson Tide at 1 p.m. The Alabama men are presently ranked No. 21 nationally with the Crimson Tide women on the outskirts of the top 25, ranking 29th by voters in the CSCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Team Poll.
