NEW ORLEANS - For the first time in recorded history, the University of
New Orleans men's tennis team was triumphant over Tulane, defeating
their crosstown rival 4-3 at the Goldring Tennis Center on Saturday
afternoon.
UNO (1-2) played with a full lineup for the first time this year and took advantage of it by winning 2 of 3 doubles matches to claim the doubles' point.
After
Ben Smith and
Guilherme Rebolo suffered an 8-3 setback to Rodrigo Rappaccioli and Adam Bernstein at the No. 2 court, the Privateers picked up wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 courts against Tulane (2-2).
Abdelrahman Zaki and
Rohit Chivukula made their debut as a team in defeating Etham Frenkel and Trevor Getz 8-4 in the No. 3 position before
Stepan Siska and
Benjamin Bouhana won 8-4 at No. 1 against Shaye Wali and Joe Young to clinch the doubles' point.
In singles,
Vinay Kamineni was down 5-0, before retiring to Young at No. 1. With the loss out of the way, the Privateers won the next three matches to be completed, clinching the dual on a 7-6, 6-1 win by Rebolo at No. 5 over Getz.
Other winners included Bouhana and Zaki, who each won in straight sets. Bouhana defeated Bernstein 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 while Zaki put away Frenkel 6-2, 6-4 on the No. 6 court.
UNO will look to continue their winning ways on Feb. 24 in Mobile, Ala. against South Alabama. The match will get underway at 1 p.m.
