McKenzie, Tulane Hold Off Privateers

NEW ORLEANS - Jeremy Schaffer went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs to help Tulane take a 7-1 win over visiting New Orleans on Wednesday evening in the first game of the First NBC Cup.

Garrett Cannizaro had three hits and two RBIs, as Tulane (2-2) won its second straight.

Freshman right-hander Kyle McKenzie (1-0) picked up the win, going six innings while allowing just one run and two hits.

UNO (0-4) managed just two hits on the night. Senior catcher Tyler Sanford had a single and scored the only Privateer run.

Redshirt freshman Andrew Richardson (0-1) took the loss, surrendering seven hits and three runs in five innings.

The game was played in an hour and 55 minutes.

Tulane scored all the runs it needed in the first inning - keyed by back-to-back doubles from Rob Segedin and Schaffer. Cannizaro followed Schaffer with an RBI single to put the Green Wave ahead 2-0.

Tulane added another run in the third to make it 3-0, and McKenzie kept UNO in check.

The Privateer offense finally got to McKenzie in the sixth. Sanford and Doty started the frame with back-to-back singles. After a sacrifice bunt from Ryan Eden, Kevin Berry got Sanford home with a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 3-1.

Tulane, though, put the game away with three runs in the seventh before adding its final run in the eighth.

UNO will return home this weekend, hosting Youngstown State in a three-game series at Maestri Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
