MOBILE, Ala. - South Alabama swept the University of New Orleans in a
pair of tennis duals on Wednesday afternoon at the Bruce David Lubel
Memorial Courts.
The USA women (1-3) won their first dual match of the year with a 4-3 victory over their UNO (2-4) counterparts, who fell for the fourth straight match. On the men's side, the Jaguars (3-4) prevailed 6-1 over the Privateers (1-3).
In the women's match, UNO got off to a rough start by dropping both contested doubles' matches by 8-4 verdicts.
Kozue Matsumoto and
Cassandra Escobar fell at No. 1 to Chane Hines and Katie Welch, while
Kristina Martic and
Sofija Karalic met defeat on the No. 2 court to Jess Courtnell and Marie Boura.
With the start of singles' play, the Privateer women posted two quick wins with a walkover victory at No. 6 and
Ceara Howey picking up a straight-set victory over Jessica Houston by a 6-0, 6-0 score. From there, the Jaguars won 3 of 4 matches to clinch the dual.
Amber Garza, who was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Courtnell at No. 4 was the only other UNO player to pick up a victory in singles' play.
Like the women, the Privateers suffered defeats in both contested doubles' matches to begin their day. Dauw Kruger and Lucas Viel defeated
Abdelrahman Zaki and
Rohit Chivukula 8-0 at No. 3 with
Ben Smith and
Guilherme Rebolo falling 8-2 to Christian Kuehne and Alexandre Bernard at No. 2.
With the doubles' point in hand, the Jaguar men won the first three singles' matches to finish on way to clinching the dual. Smith was the lone winner for head coach
Burzis Kanga in one-on-one action, bouncing back from a set down for a 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (3) victory.
The competition only gets tougher for the UNO men, who will take on nationally-ranked LSU at 7 p.m. in Baton Rouge, La. on Thursday. The Privateer women are off until Sunday at 12 p.m. when they host Sun Belt rival Troy at the University Tennis Center
